Our last ESN event, first party in Warsaw

Last ESN event, nice. But, why? It’s simply because the ESN here doesn’t seem to be that passionate about organizing colorful, quality events as we do in ESN Pécs.

Yesterday we attended one of their events called Sunset at the Palace of Culture and Sciences – they changed the name later for “night” something. This event sounds great, doesn’t it? We thought so too. So, we registered at ESN UW for the event that started at 7pm. We set off around 6.30pm when I saw the sun was already setting. That was the point when I started questioning the concept of the whole event, but I though I’m on Erasmus, so I have to go to that ESN event to be with Erasmus people. So, continued our commute to the place, the event said ESN members are waiting for us at the main entrance, but when we got there at 7.02pm no one was anywhere, so when we entered the building, we saw some people who were definitely not locals – after spending some time around Erasmus students you will simply know if someone is local or an exchange student – so we went up to them ask what’s up. Of course, they didn’t know where we had to go, so we wrote in the whatsapp group. As it turned out one ESNer was already outside waiting for us with an ESN flag FOLDED into the smallest size it is possible. Then she told us to go buy a ticket and wait in the line, and ESNers will join us/wait for us on the top of the building. Well, we waited 45mins to get to the elevator, in the meantime an official came up to us, and said that we might not make it to the elevator before the whole place closes at 8pm! (if you already got up to the terrace you can stay till 9.30pm) So we paid 15PLN (reduced ticket) just to wait 45mins and might not be able to see what we came for. Oh and yes, the official did NOT speak any English there was a Polish family behind us whom I asked “Movie po anglesko?” – do you speak English ooor something similar – thankfully he did, and helped us understand what the official said.
So eventually we made it to the terrace – which is on the 30th floor and the view is pretty awesome – and there were nobody! No crowd no ESNer, nothing! Why did we have to wait so long then? At this point I wasn’t expecting anything from ESN UW, we decided to just walk around and do our private ESN event.

After this memorable event we met Sári’s mentor Ola and her friend Julia, who also speaks Hungarian! We had a few drinks near the university – I’d say old town, but I’m not quite sure if it belongs to the old town or not. And we went to an open-air disco called Rakeita. They played pretty good music, spiced with some Polish flavors – every night they play the Polish version of Happy Birthday to you and some Polish folk music as well.

To be honest I feel like we should hang out more with Ola and her friends and ignore the ESN events because they invited us for much better programs. Good point for Polish hospitality bad point for ESN UW.
