First Day in Lithuanian

So, in yesterday’s post we’ve arrived to Vilnius, where we spent two nights. The first night was almost over by the time we got there and we were exhausted because of the long drive, so instead of exploring the city we’ve just collapsed somewhere near our beds.

The next morning, we got up bright and early at exactly 0914. Then we had a quick breakfast, then headed out to our first Baltic city! It was really exciting to be in a country and in a city that we have never been to — nor our parents’ve been to! It was an amazing feeling to be a pioneer in same ways.

First we walked to the city center, where we found the Vilnius Cathedral Bell Tower, a huge basilica, and the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. After we wandered around we started feeling hungry, so we began our search for local food. It went waaaay easier than we would’ve ever expected, we walked three blocks maximum when we found a beautiful restaurant, which claimed itself to be great Lithuanian restaurant. Being stupid tourists we bought their claims, and ate there. Believe it or not, but eating there was one of the best decisions we have ever made! The food was delicious! I had mashed potato bake with cheese and crispy onion crust, fresh vegetable salad and chicken stuffing, while Sari was having baked boiled potato cakes with something I can’t recall, neither can I recall their local name. Which is unlucky. When we ordered our lunch there was a bit of a bump in the communication, and I felt like the issue wasn’t with us, somehow we weren’t on the same page with the waitress. However I’ve forgiven her everything after she brought us our delicious meals. I was absolutely amazed how good these dishes were, they were like the best marriages of spices and ingredients! To top it off or flash it down I had Vilkmerges, my very first Lithuanian beer. My friend Barbora who lives in Vilnius suggested this brand, and told me to try the cherry one, and it was money! At this point I had doubts if it actually worth it going further North, because how on Earth were we going to top this meal?!

When we finished our lunch, we continued exploring, we checked out some of the street arts in Vilnius and ended up we walking on the riverside — yes there is a beautiful river called Neris flowing thru the city. And from the riverside we turned right to climb to the Three Crosses Memorial. First we had to walk thru a beautiful park called Kalnai Park, and then we got to a place that looked like the basecamp of Mount Everest, and the ‘hill’ of crosses seemed more like the mountain of crosses. We started our climb, first we got to a swing, which was adorable, we had an amazing view on the city, then we wanted to continue our walk on the mountain range, however there were no range! What we found between the two hills was a huge valley, it was impossible to walk around it, we had to climb down  — when I say climb I mean sliding on our asses — to the valley, and from there we had to take billions and billions — here please imagine Trump saying ‘billions and billions […]’ — of stairs to the top where we found the three crosses. It was a relief to sit down on top of the hill, with the beautiful view in our sight which was called Lithuania.

It was an amazing day with beautiful weather, beautiful architecture, beautiful dishes. That day was amazing, I wish we could’ve stayed more and could’ve met Barbora. But the road was calling and we had to get moving.

I’ll see you in Latvia tomorrow!

Take care,

Almos
