Last Night

So, today/yesterday is/was our last day in Warsaw… There are a lot of emotions going on right now, as I’m laying in the bed staring at the empty wall that used to have pictures of us till the apartment was ours — actually I don’t know till when it is ours… Our contract ends on the 11th so does our Erasmus, but I don’t know if that means we could sleep here on the 11th or it’s like a hotel, where you have to leave the place by 1000 on the 11th. This last one sounds the most realistic.

Anyways onwards with the blog: the day before yesterday we’ve put a lot of stuff into the car, so the apartment was already emptier than it used to be. While Sari was packing our stuff I went to the national bank, because we have ripped a paper zloty, and allegedly the national bank could it change it only. The bank was around a 30 minutes walk, which was no biggie, however the same couldn’t be said of the line that was waiting to enter the bank. I was waiting in the line for 30 minutes when someone went inside to check why wasn’t anything happening. When he came out he said ‘one lady’ some other Polish words ‘one machine’ buncha other Polish words. Then after another 10 ish minutes an attendant came out, told us a pretty long dialogue and went inside. I knew he said something important, so I quickly looked around, searching for the youngest, most English speaker lookalike. There was a girl next to me — probably as old as I was — so I asked her whether she spoke any English, she shyly said ‘a little bit.’ That’s my favorite answer, because a) they usually speak way better than a little bit b) you don’t feel the pressure to speak extra sophisticated and c) my personal favorite: because this way you have the opportunity to learn new Polish words, plus you also have the opportunity to learn about the Polish language structure. So, she was pretty shy, so instead of making her fill even more uncomfortable I just showed her the ripped-zloty and asked if she thinks I could skip the line. As it turned out I was allowed to skip the line I’ve been waiting in for 40ish minutes. Bummer. I think I could’ve been pretty annoyed, but honestly I was just happy to be inside. Inside was a guy who helped those people who didn’t even know which planet were they walking on — yep, that was me — he was super nice, not too fluent in English, but yet he spoke pretty well, and he was helpful as anything. When I was walking out the door I said thanked him for his help, but he didn’t let me out without asking if I managed to solve the issue. Seriously how nice he was?! It was a great experience — much much better than the experience with the bank yesterday, when they closed at 1400 which was more 1351 in reality.

After the bank we had our last dinner on Erasmus in Warsaw at a place called Food City. It was a huge building packed with restaurants and few bars. Sari had some pasta thingy, her server was a super nice Italian lookalike guy, while I was going for some fatty meaty disgusting stuff. I found an American restaurant, where I asked the guy if he spoke any English, he said something a bit rudely, but I wanted to eat so I answered him nicely. When I got my dish I was absolutely shocked, it looked sooo good, I gave the guy a strong accomplishment, that made him a bit happier. Before we stared eating I must’ve gone for my last Polish beer, and due to the huge amount of people who where that we had to postpone the start of our dinner for the next semester… It was pretty bad. After I got my beer and we started eating, my tastebuds were exploding continuously, my Philly Cheesesteaks was amazing.

After dinner we just sat there, and talked, while we enjoyed the place, the city, and of course the company. Before we left I walked up to my server told him how great the food was, then he was truly happy, which made me happy again — again after eating that greatness.

It was a great day, I wish we could stay a bit longer…

Take care,

Almos
